Lucid Motors Air Review Jan 18, 2017 by Cedric (Driver Weekly)
It’s an exciting time for automotive enthusiasts interested in electric cars. New companies are testing new vehicles with new technology and unique styling. While Lucid Motors hasn’t received the same attention as Faraday Future (and that might be a good thing) just wait until you learn a little more about their pre-production executive car. This luxury electric sedan was unveiled in December in Fremont, California. It takes all the environmental friendliness of an EV and combines it with the features of a luxury car, with a few additions.
The Lucid Motors Air will be a supercar and a luxury vehicle at the same time. It has a pair of motors that deliver a whopping 1,000 horsepower combined. With output like that, it should come as no surprise that this model will be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in only 2.5 seconds. The Air will also be available with a 130-kilowatt-hour battery that has a 400-mile range. To put that in perspective, the most expensive Tesla Model 3 has a 337-mile range. That said, the standard Air will have the same size battery as this Tesla Model 3, 100 kilowatt-hours. The dual motors in the Air are possible thanks to the fact that electric motors take up less room than combustion ones. This allows Lucid engineers to put an engine on each of the axles, giving the vehicle all-wheel drive in addition to the impressive horsepower.
Following the camouflaged Air variant that appeared in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Lucid Motors gave us a better idea of the car’s regular appearance. The car’s design is nearly complete, and it looks very futuristic. This large sedan has thin stripes for its taillights and headlights. The interior is aimed at the “executive car” market with more emphasis on comfortable rear seating than you see on other electric cars focused on a “sporty” image. This might help their car achieve success.
The Lucid Motors Air will be packed with all the features you expect from a luxury car that costs over $100,000. It will have multiple autonomous features, like Lidar, radar, and cameras. Everywhere you look inside the cabin, you will see enormous screens and infotainment gadgets to keep you connected while taking advantage of the latest technology.
The Air’s Future
Samsung SDI will be manufacturing the lithium-ion batteries that power the Lucid Motors Air. The car itself will begin production in 2018 in Lucid Motors’ new Arizona factory. By 2022, the company plans to have over 2,000 employees working full time. While the expected price for the Air is above $100,000, it is possible that the exclusive Launch Edition models will cost up to $160,000. If you are interested, you can already preorder your Air. Expect to pay a $2,500 deposit for the regular Lucid Motors Air and a $25,000 deposit if you want the Launch Edition. Electric motors can now provide serious speed and acceleration, but Lucid Motors has successfully avoided unnecessary pretensions to sportiness. The Air might be able to expand the market for these fast and quiet electric cars. It should be some serious competition for the Tesla models, particularly among those interested in luxury vehicles.
