Refreshed 2018 BMW i3 Preview May 1, 2017 by Cedric (Driver Weekly)

The 2018 BMW i3 will be a refreshed model, but information is still very limited. At the moment, we are mostly going off of rumors about the improved urban electric car. The official debut should occur during the Frankfurt Auto Show during September, and until then, we are limited to spy shots and other leaked information along with educated guesses.

Refined Look

The i3 continues to feature distinctive badging, blue accents, and boxy styling seen on the 2017 model pictured. Most buyers will either love or hate the evocative look. Although BMW hasn’t said much about the 2018 i3, we can make plenty of educated guesses based on spy shots. In late February, the vehicle was spotted undergoing testing, and the areas of the vehicle that were under heavy camouflage are telling. Even so, it is obvious that the front bumper has been updated to include new headlight graphics. There may or may not be updated fog lights as well. Unfortunately, the rear portion of the i3 was heavily covered during testing, which tells us that something has changed, although we don’t know what. Based on the spy shots, it is clear, however, that the taillight graphics seem to match those on the current version. Experts predict that there will be an updated list of exterior colors offered as well.

Improved Infotainment

The interior of the 2018 BMW i3 should be very similar to the current one but with the latest version of BMW’s infotainment system. While it probably won’t be as advanced as the 5 or 7-Series models, which are all new, the i3 should still have the latest connectivity along with most of the available convenience and safety features.

Increased Power

It is very likely that the regular version of the i3 will get a small increase in power as well as a range for 2018, going past 200 miles. The majority of power-related rumors focus on the battery capacity, which has steadily grown over the years. For example, the 2014 i3 only had an 81-mile range, which was competitive when it launched We can only hope that it will improve with the latest model. The i3S flagship model will have hotter performance with additional sporting character. This model will officially be the first electric hot hatch offered. While the performance of this model may not increase dramatically, there should be enough of a difference to satisfy drivers and let it enter the category of performance-oriented hatchbacks. According to rumors, this will be the most expensive version of the 2018 BMW i3, which should come as no surprise since it will be the most powerful.

We will get our first real look at the 2018 BMW i3 in September during the Frankfurt Auto Show. It will most likely arrive in showrooms around the world late this year or early next year, meaning you still have to wait a bit longer to get behind the wheel. In the meantime, the 2017 i3 has updates of its own, including an enhanced range.
