2017 Polaris Slingshot Review Feb 1, 2017 by Cedric (Driver Weekly)

The Polaris Slingshot is among the most popular three-wheeled vehicles. It is the original three-wheeled roadster, and the 2017 model continues to embody a tradition of simple fun and driving pleasure. You are unlikely to find a negative review of this roadster thanks to its pricing, power, comfortable racing seats, and effective design.

Polaris SLR

One welcome change to the 2017 Polaris Slingshot is the addition of a new model, the SLR. This new Slingshot SLR sits at the top of the lineup for this model. It gives you forged aluminum wheels that are 18 inches in the front and 20 in the rear. The tires are 40 mm wider than the standard ones, reaching 305 mm. This new model also has Sparco touchpoints on the steering wheel, pedal covers, and aluminum shift knob along with full-body graphics, a two-tone paint scheme, interior LED lighting, composite brake rotors, and an open-air intake.

Performance and Driving Feel

The 2017 Slingshot uses a 2.4-liter DOHC engine that works with a 5-speed manual transmission. This combination delivers 166 pound-feet of torque and 173 horsepower that can propel this small vehicle around the track like a demon. To make driving better, the Slingshot also has ABS disc brakes, electronic stability control, traction control, and electronic power-assisted steering. When you get to the customization of your Slingshot, there are choices to enhance the vehicle’s performance, such as wider rear tires, a premium open air intake, and a unique shifter knob. Fast and fun, the Slingshot feels like driving an open-cockpit racing car.

Keep Items Secure

Since the Slingshot doesn’t have a trunk like you would find in a traditional car, some people are concerned about secure storage. Luckily, Polaris has kept this in mind with the 2017 model, just like in previous years. There is a glove box to fit important papers and also multiple lockable storage bins. This way, you can keep your valuables safe without having to take them with you when you leave your roadster. For those who think the Slingshot still doesn’t have enough room for them, Polaris offers various storage bags that are designed to work perfectly with this roadster and give you more room to keep your items.

Customization as Always

As is always the case, the 2017 Polaris Slingshot is once again highly customizable. You can get the base version, which is always in Gloss Black, or opt for the Slingshot SL in Black Pearl or Sunset Red. The new Slingshot SLR is offered in Black Pearl or Turbo Silver. After that, you can customize your Slingshot by adjusting the wheels, adding one of several wind deflectors to keep you comfortable while driving, or adding styling elements such as decals. Those who want technology can get the audio system and a backup camera as well.

While the small size and lack of cargo capacity mean that a three-wheeled roadster won’t fit every family, there’s something to be said for the simple pleasure of using the Polaris Slingshot as an exciting daily driver. It is worth it to give this quick little vehicle a shot.
