Apr 29, 2016 by Cedric (Driver Weekly)

With thousands of gorgeous miles of beach and an entire continent to explore, Australia offers drivers the choice of hundreds of different road trips in addition to the famous sights of the Great Ocean Road. On any Australian road trip, you will see gorgeous wildlife and views, making it hard to choose where you want to go. Depending on the trip just be sure to rent or buy the proper vehicle for rougher roads and purchase the proper supplies, including a GPS system, water, and gasoline. If you’re ready here are some of the most memorable road trips to consider in Australia.

6. Cape Tribulation to Cairns

Although this is one of the shorter road trips, you will always remember your drive between Cairns and Cape Tribulation. This area of North Queensland will take you to the Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef. If you have the chance, plan this road trip for winter since this will help you avoid stingers and humidity. However, be prepared for the crowds. Don’t forget to visit Port Douglas and Mossman Gorge along the way.

5. Brisbane to Sydney

Driving between Sydney and Brisbane should take you about 10 to 13 hours and will give you memorable scenery. The 900-kilometer route tracks the beaches and seaside towns of the coast, passing by rivers and wineries and along the green rolling hills in hinterland. Check out Port Macquarie, Hunter Valley, Coffs Coast, Kingscliff, the Gold Coast, and Byron Bay for wildlife excursions and ocean-side retreats.

4. Gibb River Road

The Gibb River Road in Western Australia is 700 kilometers and runs between Kununurra and Derby. This trip provides a window into Australia’s past. You will see cattle stations, plains, waterfalls, and gorges. Learn about Aboriginal history, see Boab trees, or go camping. This particular road trip is ideal for those with four-wheel drive. Some highlights include Zebedee Springs, Emma’s Gorge, and El Questro.
