How to Plan Your Autobahn Germany Road Trip Apr 11, 2016 by Cedric (Driver Weekly)
For those with a sense of adventure, taking a road trip around Germany on the Autobahn can be a fun experience. The Autobahn is known for its very relaxed or non-existent speed limits, and this is just one of the things that bring drivers from around the world to enjoy it. The high speeds of the Autobahn also mean it takes less time to cover its 1,000 kilometers and visit multiple cities along the way. Start planning your Autobahn road trip through Germany to make sure you get the best possible experience.
Understand the Rules
Before you decide to drive on the Autobahn for your road trip, you will want to make sure you understand what is involved. Despite popular belief, there are speed limits on parts of the Autobahn. However, they are much higher than speed limits in America. Be ready to pay attention to whether a particular segment of the road has a speed limit and follow it. You also need to be aware of the rules for driving on the Autobahn or in Germany in general, such as not passing on the right and staying on the right if you are driving slower than nearby drivers. Once you have done some research and feel confident in your driving, you can start planning your stops for your road trip.
If you aren’t sure which cities you will be visiting during your Autobahn getaway, then consider going in the following order. Start in Cologne, then make your way to Dusseldorf, followed by Munster, Osnabruck, Bremen, Hamburg, Rostock, Potsdam, and Berlin. You can also reverse the order, but, in either direction, the Autobahn offers a thrilling drive to and from some of Germany’s most entertaining cities. Next, check out our three top recommendations.
