2017 Bentley Bentayga Review Oct 12, 2016 by Cedric (Driver Weekly)
The Bentley Bentayga is an SUV that is the epitome of luxury and performance. Not only is it packed with features you expect from Bentley, but it is the fastest model of its type thanks to its top speed of 187 miles per hour. This vehicle is a first for the automaker, but with this new SUV Bentley is capitalizing on a growing market and giving luxury buyers a new option for both style and utility. This may be the first SUV from Bentley, but it is destined to be a hit.
The New Look
The new model is tall compared to its siblings, measuring 68.6 inches in height. That being said, it is not the largest addition to the fleet. It measures 78.7 inches wide and 202.4 inches long. By comparison, this is 17 inches shorter and 3 inches wider than the Bentley Mulsanne. The SUV weighs about 5,400 pounds, a low weight that is thanks to most of the sheet metal being aluminum. In fact, the body side of this model is the largest single aluminum stamping in the auto industry. While the styling is not universally admired, the prominent grille and circular headlights ensure that this model is instantly recognizable. With a muscular appearance, lightweight body, and prestigious style, the Bentley Bentayga is a perfect fit for the luxury market.
Under the hood, you will find an all-new engine. This W12 is a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged that pumps out the power. It works with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The result is as much as 600 bhp and 664 pound-feet of torque. In addition to its top speed of 187 miles per hour, the Bentayga can go from zero to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds. Even with so much power, it gets a reasonable fuel efficiency for its class with 16 mpg combined.
Behind the Wheel
Those who get the chance to drive the 2017 Bentley Bentayga enjoy the experience. The multilink suspensions have exemplary damping that lets you go over extreme speed bumps with ease. The electric power steering feels direct and weighty, great for an SUV. Thanks to the neutral handling, you will easily forget the size and weight of this vehicle when behind the wheel. Part of this is the Bentley Dynamic Ride that delivers outstanding body control. This active anti-roll bar counters natural roll via electric actuators. While it won’t have the responsiveness of a smaller or sportier car, the handling is more than acceptable for a larger vehicle.
As one of the most prestigious models available, the Bentayga has the latest technology, including a standard 8-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. You also get standard high-beam assist, exit warning, and blind-spot warning with the ability to add in the head-up display, park assist, night vision, pedestrian warning, and traffic sign recognition. There is even a specific app for the Apple Watch to let you easily change the air conditioning, massage, heating, and ventilation settings from anywhere in the car. At the same time, the luxury features don’t include storage space: there are only sixteen feet behind the rear seats. You won’t be able to use it for any cargo or gear that a traditional SUV would be capable of carrying.
To complete the luxurious feel, the SUV comes standard with a full leather interior in your choice of four veneers and fifteen hides, split and folding heated rear seats in a 4+1 configuration, full LED adaptive headlights, and a panoramic tilt and slide sunroof featuring an electric blind. There are a variety of trims and colors available for any buyer. Naturally, the Bentley Bentayga is an expensive vehicle, but for those that can afford the price this SUV is currently the pinnacle of luxury and distinguished style.
