2016 Chevrolet Suburban Review Apr 11, 2016 by Cedric (Driver Weekly)
The full-size Chevrolet Suburban provides powerful capabilities and an incredibly spacious interior. The SUV has a bold, boxy appearance and comes with the latest technology and features. These features and its luxury amenities make it a popular option for drivers in search of an SUV that can seat up to nine passengers. If you’re interested in the Suburban, consider the engine, seating, and cargo capabilities.
Power and Engine
Experts love that the Chevy Suburban comes standard with a 5.3-liter V8 engine that is powerful enough for the SUV even when it is packed with people and cargo. This engine delivers 383 pound-feet of torque and 355 horsepower. In addition to the horses, the engine provides surprising best-in-class highway fuel economy of 23 mpg. It works with a six-speed automatic transmission and the choice of two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The 4WD has a single speed and boosts traction on winter roads. You can also opt for a traditional 4WD system featuring a two-speed transfer case if you plan on off-roading. Chevrolet understands that an SUV as large and powerful as the Suburban will be used for towing, which is why it comes standard with a trailer wiring harness and trailer hitch receiving jack. 2WD models can tow 6,300 pounds; 4WD versions will tow 6,000.
The standard Suburban will seat eight passengers, but you can adjust this to either seven or nine. Swap out the second-row bench seat for captain’s chairs to get seating for seven, or change the first row on the LS trim to a 40/20/40 bench seat to make room for nine passengers. As one of the more expensive Chevrolet models, all Suburbans come with power adjustment for the front seats, including 8-way adjustment and power lumbar for the driver and 4-way adjustment for the passenger. The Suburban LT trim and higher trims add leather upholstery and heating for the front seat and options to get power-folding seats in both the rear rows.
To increase the amount of cargo space available, Chevrolet listened to drivers. It is possible to integrate the third row right into the floor, so you don’t have to try to remove it. The tradeoff is that the cargo floor loading height is higher than it used to be, making it harder to fit larger amounts of cargo or even reach the cargo area if you are shorter than average. That being said, the Suburban has a truly expansive cargo area. Behind the third row of seats, you get 38.9 cubic feet, an impressive number. Folding down the third row increases this to 76.7 cubes, or you can fold down the second row as well and enjoy 121.1 cubic feet.
The different seating and cargo systems are easy to configure and use in this family-friendly SUV. Overall, considering the price point the 2016 Chevy Suburban is powerful, spacious, and packed with the latest technology.
