2016 Elio Motors Preview Dec 14, 2016 by Cedric (Driver Weekly)
Elio Motors is a new automaker with little name recognition, but it is forging a new segment that could eventually appeal to the average driver. The company was founded by Paul Elio, an automotive enthusiast who took a critical look at the vehicles available, including their rising cost and fuel consumption. Elio came up with a unique solution to this problem, a three-wheeled commuter vehicle with unprecedented affordability and efficiency.
Elio Motors aims to provide drivers with economical personal transportation that is nice to the planet, safe, and fun to drive. It could appeal to an incredible range of drivers. This could include students who want a nicer way to get to campus and single workers who need a cheap vehicle to get around the city. Families who have larger SUVs or minivans would have a fuel-efficient alternative for their commute to work or any time they don’t need as much room.
Design and Features
The Elio Motors vehicle looks incredibly futuristic with its three-wheel design and tandem interior seating for one driver and one passenger. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 9.6 seconds and has a 3-cylinder 0.9-liter automotive engine with fuel injection, a SOHC design, liquid cooling, and variable valve lift. This engine should produce 55 horsepower and 55 pound-feet, which will be more than enough to move this smaller model with ease as it can reach speeds of over 100 mph. It runs on a regular unleaded fuel for convenience. Every model has air conditioning and heating, power windows and locks, disc brakes, cruise control, and an AM/FM stereo radio. There will also be a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty. There are hundreds of options for customizing the vehicles, including stereo upgrades and leather upholstery, and seven different exterior colors.
It isn’t hard to see just a few of the benefits of the models designed by Elio Motors. Elio committed to domestic production, providing new jobs for Americans in Shreveport, Louisiana. The vehicles have been designed to meet the most rigorous safety standards and are incredibly affordable, starting at just $7,300. They will also save you an incredible amount on fuel, as you get as much as 84 miles per gallon on the highway. While it won’t be useful for families on its own, it could still be useful for many drivers and commuters.
Many experts are quick to point out the slow pace at which Elio Motors is moving toward introducing its vehicles to the market, but it has made progress. In July 2016, it produced its first test car known as E1A. There will be a total of 23 “E-Series” validation and testing vehicles. These are typical tests done by any other automaker working to finalize the design. After Elio Motors completes these tests, it will build 100 pre-production models in Shreveport, Louisiana. As of July, there were already 55,000 reservations for the vehicle, showing plenty of interest.
While the Elio won’t appeal to every driver, the unprecedented efficiency is an attractive feature for many buyers if this vehicle enters mass production.
