2018 Ford Fiesta ST Preview Apr 10, 2017 by Cedric (Driver Weekly)
The 2018 Ford Fiesta ST isn’t available yet, but the automaker recently gave us a glimpse. We are all excited for this upcoming hot hatchback. The Fiesta made its official world debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, and it looks ready to turn heads.
The Fiesta ST’s engine will see some serious upgrades, including dropping a cylinder. Thanks to EcoBoost technology, the 2018 model will still generate almost 200 horsepower. The 1.5-liter EcoBoost has three cylinders and will give you 197 horsepower, along with 214 pound-feet of torque. We expect this to be more than enough to deliver thrills given the small size of the Fiesta. The ST will be able to reach 62 mph from a standstill in 6.7 seconds, meaning it could beat the previous ST in this sprint by 0.2 seconds. If the powertrain sounds familiar, that is because it is the one American drivers are used to while Europeans had a 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. Another exciting piece of news is that the 2018 Ford Fiesta ST will feature Drive Modes that include Track, Sport, and Normal. This will be the first Fiesta with this feature. Each Drive Mode will adjust the suspension response as well as that of the throttle for improved driving dynamics.
Styling That Means Business
The Fiesta ST was certainly eye-catching at the Geneva Motor Show. It sat on 18-inch alloy wheels, and this larger tire and wheel package helped create a more aggressive stance. The Fiesta ST’s prominent driving lights, rear spoiler mounted to the hatch, and blacked-out mesh grille enhanced the bold feel. Inside, the driver gets to relax in Recaro sport seats that provide all the support you could want while using the flat-bottom steering wheel that was clearly inspired by competition vehicles. The 2018 Ford Fiesta ST will also offer plenty of room for personalization, including on the gear lever trim and door handles.
Ford also stocked the Fiesta ST with entertainment features via the Sync3 infotainment system. You can opt for a touchscreen of up to 8 inches and use familiar gestures, such as swiping and pinching. Connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will make smartphone pairing a breeze, and your music will sound great on the Bang & Olufsen Play audio system.
The 2018 Fiesta ST will be available in Europe as a 3-door hatchback or a 5-door hatchback. Ford is considering releasing it for the United States market, as well, but hasn’t made that official. It should launch early in the next year, meaning that 2018 will be its model year and release date.
